Garage Museum

There is a huge problem with museums for contemporary art in the countries of ex-Yugoslavia. Most of them are either not existing, not functioning – or they are under renovation. There is currently just one working, in Novi Sad, Serbia, and all the others are either closed or were never built, like in the case of Sarajevo and Priština.

In Ljubljana we have a museum of Modern Art, which is under renovation at the moment. The main problem with it is that it is not just under renovation – but the entire organisation moved away, they got the offices, but they never got a space for exhibitions. Since we don’t have a museum of contemporary art, the museum of modern art is taking the role of the museum of contemporary art and modern art and for the Slovenian scene this is a huge gap, which will be there for another two years most probably, because in our region (all those Slovenes would say we are not Balkans, but we are) you know that when you say one year it’s going to be two to three, maybe even four. Nobody knows and nobody really cares about that. (more…)
